Photography Induction

Setting the ISO to the lowest setting for the appropriate lighting makes for the best image quality and noise reduction. Setting the aperture lower makes for a more shallow depth of field meaning the images in the foreground are more in focus than the back helping your eye focus on key points. The shutter speed being higher means you can capture moving objects as if they are frozen in time giving illusions like the one above.

This image was meant to be in better focus but we didn't have a lot of time, the lorry should have been in focus and the background blurred with a low shutter speed and aperture. This would give the idea of movement in an image.

Letter Press Experimentation

Setting up the chase for letterpress is a stressful task but once you're practiced you start to see it becoming easier. I had to set it up multiple different ways when I first started this piece as I couldn't get a hold on which way round the letters or words should be placed.

The reason I added larger lettering in and spaced the words out is because it fits to the way the song lyric is sung. The words 'Black Treacle' were a larger point size than the rest to add emphasis as it is the name of the song. 'Tar' has been printed in italics because the word is augmented to carry on the note.

I was going to drag the ink down on the word Tar as if it was tar on the page but thought there was enough explanation in the piece already.

Black was the chosen colour because of the song title, red was used as an experiment but I added to much ink so the prints didn't come out as well as I'd hoped.

The final product is below.

Where will you be in 10 years?

Every day my plans change for the future but this is a somewhat brief outline of where I'd like to head towards in life. A guideline just to help me stay on track in life, an achievable life goal that at the moment I look forward to moving into.

What's on?

What's on in Leeds in November?

Alexandra P. Spaulding has an event at Leeds College of Art. The Event started on the 9th of October and is running until the 7th of November.

"An ancillary aim of this exhibition will be to question the place of research in professional practice three years after formal education."

Spaulding study at Glasgow School of Art and her work features "aural immersive installations".

I think this event sounds just what I love to engage in. Minimal visuals and sound. I couldn't live without music and sound at all like I stated in my previous blog post.

Inspiration

www.pinterest.com

Pinterest -

Pinterest is one of my go to sources of inspiration. I often use it because the image is more artwork based than google image search and you can quite easily find new artists and designer linking to multiple different blogs.

My Pinterest feed is littered with packaging design, poster art and comic art. Pinterest grabs your interests and feeds them back to you in a helpful manner.

Films -

Films are a big source of my inspiration. I work in a cinema so have immediate access to all new films and any artwork that comes to promote the film.

My favourite film is BTTF, Sci-Fi and time travel is something very close to me, I will touch on it further in this post for my own work.
Below I will post my tribute art to this amazing film franchise.

Marvel -

I really enjoy superhero films, especially the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I've been following it since the beginning and have been able to have a non biased view on each film giving me new ideas in my own work.

Marvel out of the two major comic companies has to be my favourite it's much more upbeat and doesn't take itself too seriously. The stories are outrages but they still make me think about if the world was like that how we would exist, it manages to draw you in so well.

Comics -

I love reading but I love the imagination and art put into comics, I think it's important to have a visual alongside the type a lot of the time but not all of it.
Last year after years of attempting to start one up I decided to create my own comic as part of my FMP for my foundation year. This links into the strong feelings about Sci-Fi and Time Travel as the novel is based all around this.
Like I said previously my Pinterest page is covered in comic art and most of my boards contain a lot of this art because I take inspiration from it all.

Here is a link to my comic in ISSUU and to the side is a preview of the cover.

Colossal -

Colossal is one of the blogs I enjoy to look at. There's always new art from all different areas, styles and artists. The piece to the left is something that I found 2 years ago and created my own responses to for my Photography A Level. I will post my responses below but as they are gifs. I will have to post a link to another page I think. Fong Qi Wei is the photographer and captured images and from different points in time. This caused different moods and lighting throughout, another one of my passions is light within artwork. I always try and include some sort of lighting or shadow in my work to make it unique to me.

Mondotees -

Has helped me a lot. The artwork on the site is always updated and constantly makes me want to buy multiple designs. The art posted to it inspired me to start remaking film poster art.

Olly Moss -

Linking back to Mondotees and my love of films Olly Moss. Moss creates some absolutely beautiful pieces of art available for purchase but with a limited amount of prints. He creates exactly what I would be thrilled to go into, film art. This piece in particular I think is absolutely incredible and is what actually brought me to him. His style is quite consistent although he does vary it from time to time but whenever I have been searching for artwork of this kind and come across one of his I have never seen before I can tell almost instantly who the creator was.

Evan Eckard -

I become quite emotional when talking about Evan Eckard, he is pretty much the reason I became interested in graphic design.
After trolling through YouTube for hours I stumbled across some of his Photoshop tutorials. From then on I improved my skill and because of him I have managed to become who I am today in design.

YouTube -

After talking about using YouTube in the previous section I thought it would be a great way to follow on.
I've used YouTube from a very young age to kill time but also find out all sorts of things I never would have before if I hadn't been procrastinating.
Art work, music, comedy sketches, tutorials are all sorts of things that I never would have found if it weren't for YouTube.

Music -

Music is one of if not he biggest source of my inspiration. I could not live without it, music is my escape from the world. I play multiple instruments and if I'm ever feeling down or can't concentrate on the world then that's my go to. It calms me and allows me to feel.

Above is an image of one of my most played Albums, Hand Built by Robots by Newton Faulkner. One of my favourite songs is People Should Smile More, Faulkner talks about the song at one of his smaller venues and how he came about writing it. He had been out of the world and hadn't left his house for a few weeks, when he finally got the courage he saw an elderly lady struggle with her shopping up some stairs, he offered to help and she hit him. This then inspired him to come up with the line for the song "I can't change the world, 'cause trying to make a difference make it worse." I think that this is absolutely amazing and show that you can pull inspiration from anywhere and even the some of the worst things that happen in life can bring good.

John Peel Lectures - Brian Eno

I have a lot to say on the Eno talk and have made quite a few notes I need to look through to present a bit more of an understanding of what I have learnt and what Eno said. For now I have my own thoughts and views of what I thought of the talk and what I took away.

Why does no one question society, we all just seem to accept the constraints. We have decided we should all go to school get a job get married and everyone should do this. Surely it would be better to live and do what we want to do with laws in place just not have our lives planned out and made for us through society and education. We are all just expected to do as were told and from a very young age were almost being brainwashed into what we should go onto do, if there’s a shortage of an “important” profession then we may be told subtly that these are the best professions to go into. I feel I myself had a much bigger potential at school but I never found it interesting enough to actually do anything about it. My grades were expected to be much higher than the actual outcome but I came across as lazy because I couldn’t get enthusiastic about the subjects I was learning because it makes it easier for a society to teach one thing, one book to study in english because we have decided that’s the best one to show the understanding of the level. Marking may take longer but the structure would still be the same if we got to learn choose our own studies, teach the structure not the specifics. Most of the people in my year country wide will be able to give you a description of the book Of Mice and Men, I agree it’s a brilliant book but when it comes down to it I feel I could’ve achieved so much more from writing about something I was much more enthusiastic about. How can you teach enthusiasm?

Macbeth

Without going into too much detail of what the film entails (as near enough everyone knows the tale of Macbeth) I will talk briefly of the performance. I couldn’t understand the Shakespearian language but from the stunning performance of the actors I got a great feeling of what the words meant. This I think is a beautiful metaphor of how we don’t need to be able to speak the same language or appreciate the same things, believe in the same beliefs. We can, through art convey all sorts of emotion and just sit back to enjoy what is going on around us. Michael Fastbender gave one of the best performances of his life in my opinion. The raw emotion he put across the film, the connection he had to all other characters and the pure energy he put into the role was outstanding, he himself is an artist.

The film was somewhat ruined for me with a woman on our row shining her phones light into our faces but even with this I was still able to enter back into the world on the screen, I felt part of it and when me and my friends sat at the end we had to just watch as the credits rolled by because we all agreed on the beauty we had seen.
Talking more about the cinematography of the film one scene stood out to me in particular; The final battle scene. Across the entire set there must have been so much orange smoke it filled the screen and the battlefield. A sort of poem, like any of Shakespeare’s writing ensued in the middle of the scene between Macbeth and Macduff as a sea of emotions crashed into the scene. All the way through this brutal and feeling filled act this orange smoke stays this meant only a silhouette of the characters could be seen. Overtime I saw Macbeth’s dark orange shadow break through the lighter screen I gained more and more inspiration to create some sort of poster or artwork to show off the film. If I can find a screen shot I will post it below and try to come back and add the artwork I saw when watching the film.

All together the film I think showed off the beauty of Shakespeare’s work but also shows off the beauty of art in almost all it’s forms, visual, audible and the general feeling of that it causes.
